Never played?

You don't need experience. Or friends.

Ultimate Frisbee is a self-refereed, mixed-gender, fast-moving outdoor sport. Our leagues use a 'hat' format - you sign up solo and we build balanced teams for you.

It's a team sport played with a flying disc. Two teams score by catching the disc in the opposing end zone. You can't run while holding it - you have to throw it. No referees: players call their own fouls, which sounds chaotic but genuinely works.

Every game ends with a "spirit circle" - teams score each other on sportsmanship, not just the result. It keeps the vibe genuinely great.

Pickup Sessions

When we're running pickup it's a casual, drop-in throw - no signup, no experience needed, just turn up. We don't run them every week at the moment, so check our Facebook group for details of any upcoming sessions.

One Day

One-Day Hat Tournament

A fun, single-day tournament. You'll be put on a random team and play a handful of games. It's the best possible introduction to tournament ultimate - low stakes, loads of fun.

Join a League

Our Spring and Autumn grass leagues run for 7 weeks. The Winter beach league runs for 5. Hat format means you'll be placed on a mixed team - come solo or bring friends, both are very welcome. Register individually.

Common worries

Will I actually fit in?

I've never played ultimate - will I be completely lost?
Honestly, no. Everybody starts at the beginning. We run a quick rules intro at the start of every league, and because it's a hat league - meaning we put the teams together - you'll always have experienced players on your team who are happy to help. The most common thing we hear after someone's first session is "that was way easier to pick up than I thought".
I don't know anyone in the club.
That's kind of the whole point of hat leagues. You sign up individually, we put together balanced mixed teams of people who mostly haven't met. By week three, you'll have a new group of friends. A lot of our longest-running members joined exactly this way.
I'm not very fit or athletic.
Ultimate has a place for everyone. League games are social-competitive - there's no pressure to be the fastest person on the field. With a hat league, every team has people of all abilities and fitness levels, so there's always going to be someone for you to match up against. Many of our members don't consider themselves "sporty" - they just enjoy being outside and throwing a disc.
Is it expensive?
League fees are kept as low as we can manage. We'll always publish exact costs with registration. There's no equipment to buy to start - we supply discs. Cleats are handy for grass eventually, but runners are fine to begin.
What do I actually need to bring?
Comfortable clothing you can run in and a full water bottle. Sunscreen too if you're playing on the beach (it's Queensland) - grass games are under floodlights so you can skip it for those. That's it. We supply discs. Don't buy anything before your first session - see if you enjoy it first.
What if I go once and don't enjoy it?
That's completely fine. A one-day hat tournament is a great low-stakes way to try the sport - random teams, a handful of games, no commitment past the day. Leagues themselves aren't a huge commitment either at 5-7 weeks, but a hat day is the easiest way to find out if it's for you first.
Word of mouth

From people who showed up not knowing what to expect

Started frisbee with absolutely no idea what I was doing, but it quickly became such a great environment to be part of. I've made so many new friends and always felt supported while learning new skills. That support helped me progress to playing at both regionals and nationals for the first time. I'm still loving it now, and no matter how busy my other sporting commitments get, I always make sure to keep frisbee part of it.
— Stacie G., joined Spring 2024
I had never played ultimate before and was very hesitant to join but am so glad I did. The community in the Sunny Coast is so supportive and everyone was willing to help me learn. I have since gone on to play regionals and nationals for the coast and have enjoyed every minute of it. The Sunday afternoon beach sessions are a must.

Our mixed squad competes at the Australian Beach Ultimate Nationals each year. The pointier end of what we do - usually a season or two of league time before you'd jump in, sooner if you've come from a sporty background. Selection announced before each season.

We send squads to several Brisbane tournaments through the year, including Pride Cup. Plenty of first-season players make these squads - the level varies by event, if you want to take it a step further there'll be a tournament and team we can find for you.

Who we are

A club built on showing up

Sunshine Coast Ultimate has been bringing people together through flying discs for years. We run grass and beach hat leagues and tournaments, and send squads to Beach Nationals and Brisbane every year.

The sport is self-refereed - no officials, no drama, just players who've agreed to be honest with each other. We take Spirit of the Game seriously. It's what makes the community genuinely great to be part of.

Whether you're a school student, a parent, a competitive player who just relocated, or someone who has never played a team sport in their life - you belong here.
